Chief Black Kettle was a prominent leader of the Southern Cheyenne. He traveled to various cities across Colorado during the white men settlement to make peace treaties with them. After the white men betrayed the Southern Cheyenne in the Sand Creek massacre in 1864 he continued to counsel pacifism, believing that military resistance was doomed to fail.
