Marry Harris Jones, known as Mother Jones, was an Irish-born American schoolteacher and dressmaker who became a prominent union organizer, community organizer, and activist. Jones was a prolific organizer for workers’ and miners’ rights in particular. In her early 80’s, she was arrested for organizing miners in Ludlow, CO. Weeks later J.D. Rockefeller used the National Guard to violently end the legal miners’ strike. After the massacre, she helped broker a deal to enforce labor laws for miners. ‘’Pray for the dead, and fight like hell for the living.’’
